What's a DNO?
Your Distribution Network Operator owns and operates the local electricity network that connects homes and businesses to the wider grid. It isn't necessarily the company you buy electricity from.
Energy Supplier
Who you buy electricity from (British Gas, Octopus, EDF, etc). They bill you for the units you consume.
DNO
Who operates the local electricity network (UKPN, NGED, SSEN, SPEN, ENW, Northern Powergrid). They deal with new connections, capacity and network upgrades.

Typical DNO timescales
Response times vary by application route.
DNO response times vary significantly depending on the application route, project size, network complexity and whether additional technical assessment is required. A domestic G98 notification and a 5 MW commercial generation application are fundamentally different processes with fundamentally different timescales.
For that reason we don't publish generic "DNO X = Y days" numbers.

DNO vs IDNO
What about IDNOs?
Most properties are connected to the regional DNO shown on the map. Some developments, particularly newer housing estates, commercial parks and infrastructure sites, are served by an Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO).
IDNO networks aren't geographically defined in the same way as regional DNO areas, so the network operator associated with a specific MPAN may differ from the regional DNO covering that postcode.
