Northern Powergrid DNO Applications
UK DNO application experts for solar, battery storage, EV chargers, and heat pumps connecting to NPG. We submit, chase, and get approvals, you focus on installing. Every application is tracked in your portal so you always know where it stands.

Working with NPG: what we've seen
Northern Powergrid covers the North East and Yorkshire, a broad footprint with dense urban centres (Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle) and long rural corridors. In our submitted-application data, NPG is consistently the slowest of the six DNOs for G99 turnaround. The gap isn't small either, a comparable G99 that clears UKPN in six weeks can sit with NPG for ten to twelve.
Where NPG covers
Northern Powergrid is the licensed distribution network operator for North East England, Yorkshire.
Postcode areas served: NE, DH, SR, TS, DL, HG, YO, BD, LS, WF, HD, HX, S, DN, HU
Portal & process
NPG submissions go through the Northern Powergrid's own portal. We hold direct access and submit under our engineering credentials, so you never need to create a DNO portal account.
Our tip: Build extra time into your project plan for Northern Powergrid. Persistent chasing is essential.
What we've learned about NPG
Covers North East England and Yorkshire
By far the slowest DNO for G99 assessments in our experience
G98 turnaround can drag beyond the standard window
Communication during G99 review is often limited
Why NPG applications get bounced
Real reasons we see NPG kick applications back to installers. Fixing these before submission cuts turnaround dramatically.
- 1
Application chased before NPG's own SLA window has elapsed, NPG treats this as a duplicate
- 2
SLD annotations not matching the equipment list
- 3
Export limit stated on the form but not evidenced with a G100 certificate
- 4
Application submitted without an installer engineer named on the LOA
Projects we handle in North East England
The mix of work we submit to NPG, drawn from the applications flowing through our platform.
Domestic solar retrofits across Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford (large volumes)
Commercial solar on North Yorkshire agricultural buildings
Battery storage retrofits added to existing PV (G99 modifications)
Rural Northumberland installs where communication delays hit hardest
How we handle NPG applications
Every submission is prepared and reviewed by a real DNO engineer before it goes anywhere near the NPG portal.
Correct routing
We identify G98 vs G99 from per-phase output before submission, no wrong-form rejections.
SLD prepared by experts
Every SLD is drawn by our team and reconciled against the equipment list before submission.
LOA & MPAN verified
The Letter of Authority is checked against the registered account holder for the MPAN.
Proactive chasing
We chase NPG every 5 working days and respond to information requests the same working day.
NPG DNO application FAQs
How long does a G98 notification take with Northern Powergrid?
Based on the applications we submit, G98 notifications with NPG typically take 2–5 working days. Timings vary with system size, portal backlog, and completeness of the submission.
How long does a G99 application take with Northern Powergrid?
G99 applications with NPG typically take 6–12 weeks. Larger commercial systems, export-limited installs, or projects in constrained areas can take longer, especially if network reinforcement is required.
Which portal does Northern Powergrid use?
Northern Powergrid uses the Northern Powergrid's own portal. We submit and manage applications directly through this portal on your behalf under our engineering credentials.
Can I choose to use a different DNO?
No. Your DNO is determined by the geographic location of the installation. Northern Powergrid covers North East England, Yorkshire, and installers in those areas must submit through them.
Do I need to pay Northern Powergrid to submit an application?
G98 notifications and standard G99 applications are free from the DNO itself. Costs from NPG only arise if the network requires reinforcement or you receive a chargeable connection offer. Our service fee is separate, G98 from £50+VAT, G99 from £125+VAT.
How long should I really allow for a Northern Powergrid G99?
Plan on 8–12 weeks minimum for a standard G99 with NPG. For anything commercial or export-limited, add another 2–4 weeks. We chase every 5 working days once the SLA window opens.
Is NPG's G98 process faster than G99?
Yes, G98 notifications typically clear in 2–5 working days. It's the G99 review queue that runs slow, especially for anything requiring a network study.
