Why DNO involvement is required

Why does a heat pump need DNO involvement?

Heat pumps can significantly increase a property's electrical demand. The DNO therefore needs information about the proposed heat pump and existing electrical supply so it can establish whether the installation can be connected under the applicable notification route or whether approval is required before connection.

Heat pumps sit within the ENA's Low Carbon Technology (LCT) connection process, alongside EV charge points, not the G98/G99 generation process.

The two DNO routes

There are two main routes.

Which one applies depends on the heat pump, the existing supply and other electrical loads at the property.

Route 1

Connect & Notify

Install → Connect → Notify DNO

Where the installation meets the relevant criteria (equipment, supply arrangement and existing loads), the heat pump can be installed and the DNO notified through the LCT process.

Route 2

Apply to Connect

Apply → DNO assessment → Connection decision → Install

Where prior approval is required, the DNO assesses the proposed heat pump against the existing network before the installation proceeds.

Not sure which applies? That's part of what we establish from your project information. Eligibility for Connect & Notify depends on the equipment and existing electrical supply, so we'll review the project information and follow the appropriate DNO route.

How we determine the route

Is the heat pump ENA registered?

The proposed heat-pump equipment and its ENA database status can affect the applicable DNO connection route. We check the equipment details as part of preparing the application.

Equipment

The proposed heat pump model and its ENA Heat Pump Database status affect the applicable DNO connection route.

Existing supply

Supply arrangement, phase and cut-out rating shape the maximum demand the site can accommodate.

Other electrical loads

EV chargers, showers, immersion heaters, batteries and existing generation all contribute to the whole-system demand picture.

Multiple technologies

Not just a heat pump?

The ENA uses a combined connection process for EV charge points and heat pumps. Where generation and storage are also involved, the DNO picture becomes more complex, and that's where we're most useful.

Heat pump + EV charger?

If the customer is installing multiple low-carbon technologies, let us know. We'll review the complete proposed installation and manage the appropriate DNO submission.

Solar, battery, EV and heat pump?

Multiple technologies at the same property? Send us the complete project information and we'll establish the relevant DNO requirements across the installation.

Where load management is proposed as part of the installation, we'll ensure the relevant information is included within the DNO submission where required.

Supply capacity

What if the existing supply isn't sufficient?

Where the DNO identifies that the existing service or cut-out isn't suitable for the proposed demand, additional works or a supply upgrade may be required. We'll explain the DNO response and help manage the next steps where this falls within our service.

Any network or supply-upgrade costs charged by the DNO are separate from DNO Renewables' service fee.

How it works

Some qualifying applications may receive an automated or rapid decision through the relevant DNO process. Where further assessment is required, timescales are controlled by the DNO.
