Why battery connections are different
Battery connections aren't just about export.
Battery storage can both import electricity from the network when charging and export electricity when discharging. For larger systems, both sides of the connection can influence the capacity available and the DNO's assessment.
Import capacity
How much power the battery may need to draw from the network when charging.
Export capacity
How much power the system may discharge back onto the network.
Existing generation
Solar or other generation already connected at the site, which affects available headroom.
Export limitation
Whether G100 or another export-control arrangement forms part of the proposed connection strategy.
Getting these right at application stage matters. Import and export capacity, existing generation and any proposed export limitation all shape how the DNO assesses the project.

Export-limited battery systems
Where unrestricted export isn't available or required, an export limitation scheme may form part of the proposed connection. DNO Renewables can support the application process where G100 or export limitation is proposed, including the relevant information required by the DNO.
Our role is supporting the grid application and documentation. We do not manufacture, commission or certify the export limitation equipment itself.
Adding a battery to an existing solar installation?
Adding battery storage to an existing PV installation can change the site's registered generation and export arrangement. The right DNO route depends on how the battery is being added and what's already connected.
Whether a new application or an amendment is required depends on the existing connection and how the battery is being added. Send us the existing system details and proposed equipment and we'll establish the appropriate DNO route.

Developing a standalone BESS project?
Before the formal application, understand what's possible.
Before progressing the formal connection application, understanding potential import and export capacity can be critical to establishing whether the project is viable. Our Grid Connection Feasibility service can investigate indicative import capacity, indicative export capacity, known network constraints, potential reinforcement, indicative connection costs and indicative timescales.

For utility-scale BESS, the DNO application is one part of a longer conversation. From feasibility through to connection offer, we support developers with the grid connection workstream, working alongside your commercial, planning and engineering teams.
Our scope is grid application, documentation and DNO liaison. Detailed electrical design, protection studies and specialist power-system engineering are provided by, or coordinated with, your appointed engineering team where the project requires them.

FAQs
Battery storage & BESS grid connection FAQs
Do batteries need a DNO application?+
Yes, in almost every case. Battery storage that connects to the mains supply is treated as generation and requires DNO notification or approval, most commonly through a G98 notification or a G99 application, depending on the system's inverter capacity and whether other generation is already connected. If unsure, send us the equipment details and we'll confirm the right route.
Do I need G99 for battery storage?+
G99 is the formal application route used for the majority of commercial battery systems, and for domestic systems that fall outside G98 thresholds. As a general rule, larger single-phase and three-phase battery installations use G99. We'll confirm which route applies once we've seen the equipment schedule.
Does adding a battery to existing solar require another DNO application?+
It depends on how the battery is being added and what's already been approved. Sometimes the existing approval can be amended, sometimes a new application is required. Send us the existing DNO approval, inverter details and proposed battery equipment and we'll review what needs to be submitted.
What is G100?+
G100 is the ENA engineering recommendation covering export limitation schemes. It applies where a battery or generation system is designed not to export unrestricted power to the network. Where G100 is proposed, we support the application process and provide the DNO with the relevant information they require.
Can a battery have different import and export limits?+
Yes. Battery systems can have separate import and export capacities and, for larger projects, this is often central to the connection strategy. Getting these figures right at application stage matters, they directly influence how the DNO assesses the project.
Can you handle standalone BESS connections?+
Yes. Standalone BESS is a core part of our work. We support developers with feasibility, connection strategy, formal applications, DNO liaison and commissioning documentation for standalone battery projects.
Can you assess available import and export capacity?+
Our Grid Connection Feasibility service can investigate indicative import and export capacity, known network constraints and indicative costs and timescales. Definitive figures come from the DNO's formal assessment, but feasibility can establish viability before you commit to the formal application.
Can DNO Renewables prepare the SLD?+
Yes, for routine battery projects we can prepare a single line diagram as part of the application where included within your quotation. For larger, more complex schemes an SLD prepared by your project engineering team is usually the right approach, and we work from that.
What information do you need for a battery G99?+
Site address, existing supply details, any existing generation, battery and inverter make and model, battery capacity, inverter AC capacity, proposed export limit, any existing DNO approval, an SLD (or the information for us to prepare one) and a signed Letter of Authority. For larger projects we'll also want requested import and export capacity, site boundary and proposed point of connection.
Can you manage multiple BESS sites?+
Yes. We support installers, EPCs and asset owners running multi-site programmes with feasibility across multiple DNO regions, centralised tracking, standardised reporting, formal applications and connection offer management.
Are DNO fees included?+
No. The DNO may charge separate application, assessment or design fees depending on the project and connection requirements. These are payable separately and are not included within DNO Renewables' professional fees.
Can you manage commissioning after installation?+
Yes. Once the installation is complete we manage the commissioning documentation with the DNO so the battery can operate to the terms of the connection agreement.
