Working with ENW: what we've seen

Electricity North West covers a compact, single licensed area, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria. That geographic focus shows in the response times: ENW is consistently one of the two or three fastest DNOs we submit to, and the portal is one of the most predictable. Cumbria is the exception, where rural circuits occasionally require more detailed G99 review.

Where ENW covers

Electricity North West is the licensed distribution network operator for Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria.

Portal & process

ENW submissions go through the ENW's own portal. We hold direct access and submit under our engineering credentials, so you never need to create a DNO portal account.

Our tip: ENW is generally fast. Complete first-time submissions get processed with minimal back and forth.

What we've learned about ENW

One of the more responsive UK DNOs

G98 notifications frequently confirmed same day

Straightforward G99 process for standard installs

We submit through ENW's own portal under our engineering credentials

Why ENW applications get bounced

Real reasons we see ENW kick applications back to installers. Fixing these before submission cuts turnaround dramatically.

  • 1

Postcode near the ENW/NGED or ENW/Northern Powergrid boundary, MPAN sits under a different DNO

  • 2

Battery capacity mixing up kW and kWh on the SLD

  • 3

Solar array size stated in module count rather than nominal DC kW

  • 4

Second inverter added without noting cumulative site output

Projects we handle in Greater Manchester

The mix of work we submit to ENW, drawn from the applications flowing through our platform.

High-volume domestic solar across Greater Manchester housing estates

Commercial rooftop solar on Lancashire industrial units and warehousing

Cumbrian farm and rural business installs (often solar-plus-battery)

EV charger installs across urban Manchester and Lancashire town centres

How we handle ENW applications

Every submission is prepared and reviewed by a real DNO engineer before it goes anywhere near the ENW portal.

Correct routing

We identify G98 vs G99 from per-phase output before submission, no wrong-form rejections.

SLD prepared by experts

Every SLD is drawn by our team and reconciled against the equipment list before submission.

LOA & MPAN verified

The Letter of Authority is checked against the registered account holder for the MPAN.

Proactive chasing

We chase ENW every 5 working days and respond to information requests the same working day.

ENW DNO application FAQs

How long does a G98 notification take with Electricity North West?

Based on the applications we submit, G98 notifications with ENW typically take 1–3 working days. Timings vary with system size, portal backlog, and completeness of the submission.

How long does a G99 application take with Electricity North West?

G99 applications with ENW typically take 4–8 weeks. Larger commercial systems, export-limited installs, or projects in constrained areas can take longer, especially if network reinforcement is required.

Which portal does Electricity North West use?

Electricity North West uses the ENW's own portal. We submit and manage applications directly through this portal on your behalf under our engineering credentials.

Can I choose to use a different DNO?

No. Your DNO is determined by the geographic location of the installation. Electricity North West covers Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, and installers in those areas must submit through them.

Do I need to pay Electricity North West to submit an application?

G98 notifications and standard G99 applications are free from the DNO itself. Costs from ENW only arise if the network requires reinforcement or you receive a chargeable connection offer. Our service fee is separate, G98 from £50+VAT, G99 from £125+VAT.

Why is ENW faster than most other UK DNOs?

In our data, three things stand out: a compact single licence area, a well-maintained bespoke portal, and an engineering team that acknowledges G98 notifications almost immediately. It doesn't guarantee a faster G99, but it does mean less time spent chasing.

My site is in Cumbria, do I go to ENW or SPEN?

Most of Cumbria (CA postcodes) sits under ENW. A small strip around the Scottish border can sit under SPEN. Always check the MPAN, not the postcode.
