Most DNOs want a photograph of the incoming supply cut-out and main fuse when you submit an application. It confirms the supply type and rating on the network side of the meter.
What a good cut-out photo looks like
A good photo shows:
- The whole cut-out and main fuse. Both need to be visible in the same frame.
- The fuse rating clearly readable. This is normally printed on the fuse carrier itself (often 60A, 80A or 100A). If the rating isn't visible, the photo doesn't answer the question the DNO is asking.
- The meter and any tails. Helpful context, but only if they fit without pushing the cut-out out of frame.
- Enough light. Cupboards under stairs are usually dark. Use a torch or your phone flash.
Common mistakes
- Too close. You've captured the fuse label but not the cut-out itself.
- Too far. You've captured the whole cupboard but the fuse rating is unreadable.
- Angle problem. A shot at an oblique angle usually smears the fuse rating text.
- Meter only. The meter is not the cut-out. The DNO needs to see the fuse.
- Blurred. Slow shutter in low light. Rest your hand or lean on something solid.
Where to find the cut-out
Usually next to the meter, in a cupboard, hallway, garage, or outside meter box. On commercial premises, in the incoming supply room.
What to do if you can't get a clear photo
If the cut-out is inaccessible, the fuse rating is genuinely worn off, or the customer can't get to it, upload the best photo you have and add a comment on the application explaining what you saw. Our team will ask the DNO how they'd like to proceed.
