How DNO Renewables works

You send us the project. We handle the DNO.

From collecting the right project information and preparing the application through to DNO liaison, approval and commissioning, our team manages the process while you track everything through your portal.

The whole journey

Project to completion, not just submission to approval.

Every DNO Renewables project follows the same underlying journey, adapted to the scale and complexity of what you're installing.

  1. Project

You share the information you have

  2. Review

    We check everything

  3. Application

    We prepare the submission

  4. DNO Submission

What we actually do

The service in seven steps

The same underlying process runs behind every project we manage, from a straightforward domestic G99 through to multi-MW connections.

Step 01

Tell us about the project

Start a project through your DNO Renewables portal and provide the information you already have.

Depending on the project, this might include:

  • Site address
  • System type
  • Proposed capacity
  • Customer details
  • Equipment
  • MPAN
  • Site plan
  • Existing DNO information

Don't have everything yet? That's okay — you can save your project and provide additional information as it becomes available.

Step 02

We review everything

We check the project before it reaches the DNO.

Our team reviews the information and supporting documents, identifies anything missing and confirms the appropriate application route.

  • Equipment checked
  • Capacity reviewed
  • DNO identified
  • Supporting documents checked
  • Application route confirmed

If we need anything else, we'll ask through the project portal before submission.

Step 03

We prepare the application

We prepare the DNO submission.

Once we have everything required, our team completes the relevant application and prepares the supporting information for submission, depending on the project and service selected.

  • Application forms
  • Technical information
  • Single Line Diagram
  • Equipment documentation
  • Site plans
  • Supporting calculations

Need a Single Line Diagram?

If an SLD is required and you don't already have one, DNO Renewables can prepare this as part of the agreed project scope.

Step 04

We submit to the DNO

Your application goes to the correct network operator.

Once the application is complete and all submission requirements are in place, we'll submit it to the relevant Distribution Network Operator and add the DNO reference to your project.

  • Application submitted
  • DNO reference recorded
  • Documents stored on your project
  • Status updated in the portal
Two different events

"Submitted to us" isn't the same as "submitted to the DNO."

  • Project submitted to DNO Renewables — we've received your information and can start work.
  • Application submitted to the DNO — the network operator has received the formal application.

Your project status distinguishes the two so you always know where things are.

Step 05

We manage the DNO

Then we take over the chasing.

Once the application is with the DNO, our team monitors its progress, follows up for updates, responds to queries and keeps the project moving wherever we can.

When a DNO query lands

  1. 1DNO asks a question
  2. 2DNO Renewables receives it
  3. 3We review and respond
  4. 4If we need something from you, we'll ask
  5. 5Application continues

You shouldn't have to chase us to chase the DNO. We proactively monitor live applications and follow up with the network operator at appropriate intervals. If a response becomes overdue or a project stalls, we'll continue to pursue updates and escalate where appropriate.

Step 06

Approval or connection offer

We receive the DNO's decision.

Depending on the project, this may be a straightforward approval, a formal connection offer, approval subject to export limitation, a request for further information, or an alternative connection arrangement.

  • Approval
  • Connection offer
  • Approval subject to export limitation
  • Request for further information
  • Alternative connection arrangement

We'll upload the relevant documentation to your project and explain what the DNO's decision means for your installation, including any conditions that need to be satisfied before connection.

Step 07

Installation & commissioning

We don't disappear when approval arrives.

Where commissioning is included in your service, once the installation is complete you provide the required post-installation information and our team manages the commissioning submission to the DNO.

  • Installation completed
  • Commissioning documents uploaded
  • DNO Renewables reviews
  • Submitted to DNO
  • Final documentation received
  • Project completed

What is DNO commissioning?

After certain installations are completed, the DNO requires confirmation of the final installed equipment and supporting commissioning documentation. We can manage this final stage so the DNO record reflects the completed installation.

Everything in one place

Track every stage on the project page.

Your project page gives you a single record of the application from initial submission through to completion, including current status, DNO reference, documents, messages, approval and commissioning history.

Exact responsibilities vary by service. This shows the typical shape of a managed application.

Being straight with you

What we control, and what we don't.

We can manage everything on our side of the fence brilliantly. What sits on the DNO's side is theirs to decide.

What we control

  • Application preparation
  • Submission
  • Accuracy and completeness of our work
  • Responding to DNO queries
  • Proactive follow-up
  • Keeping you updated

What the DNO controls

  • Assessment timescales
  • Network studies
  • Available capacity
  • Connection requirements
  • Reinforcement
  • Approval decisions
  • Connection offers
  • DNO charges

DNO timescales

Assessment times vary.

DNO assessment times depend on the network operator, application type, project size, network complexity and whether additional studies or reinforcement are required. We'll always share what we're seeing on your specific application.

Fees & DNO charges

Our fee and DNO charges are separate.

You pay DNO Renewables for the service we provide. Depending on the project, the Distribution Network Operator may separately charge for assessment, design, studies, connection works or other network activities.

We don't set or control DNO charges. If the network operator advises us of a charge, we'll pass the information to you before progressing where a decision is required.

Two ways to work

Manage it yourself when you want to. Hand it to us when you don't.

The same platform, two levels of involvement — switch between them project by project.

Managed service

Let us manage it

Our team manages the application and DNO liaison. You track everything through the same portal.

  • • Technical review before submission
  • • DNO liaison, chasing and query handling
  • • Commissioning support where included

What if I don't have everything?

You can still start your project. If something required for submission is missing, we'll identify it during our review and let you know exactly what we need.

For projects where key electrical information isn't available, we can also arrange a technical site survey.

Not sure the grid can support it?

For larger developments, it can make sense to assess likely network capacity, connection cost and constraints before progressing to a formal application, particularly for commercial solar, BESS, EV infrastructure, multi-site portfolios and utility-scale projects.
