G98 vs G99: which do I need?

The one minute rule of thumb, plus the edge cases that catch installers out.

Quick rule

  • G98 is a notification used for small single phase generation up to 16A per phase (roughly 3.68 kW).
  • G99 is an application used for anything larger, anything three phase, or anything with export above the G98 limit.

The catches

  1. Three phase always means G99, even if each phase is under 16A.
  2. Batteries count too. A battery inverter's rated output is included when working out the notification limit.
  3. Multiple systems on one property? Add them together. Two 3.5 kW inverters is a G99, not two G98s.
  4. Export limitation to bring a system under the G98 limit is not always accepted by the DNO. Check first.

When in doubt

Submit as G99. It's slower but a G98 that should have been a G99 will get rejected and you'll waste weeks.
