When you hand a DNO application over to an external service, you're trusting someone else to represent your company, and your customer, to the DNO. Their SLD becomes your SLD. Their calculations become the numbers on the offer letter. Their reply to a design engineer becomes the audit trail attached to the job.
So it's a fair question, one we don't think installers ask often enough: who actually does the work?
The Question No One Asks Until It's Too Late
The DNO application industry has grown quickly over the last few years, and not every service you'll see advertised handles applications the way you'd assume. Some outsource the actual document preparation, SLD drawing, and DNO correspondence to teams overseas. Some pass jobs through a rotating pool of contractors. Some run largely on templated AI outputs with light human review.
None of that is inherently wrong. But it does mean the person drafting the technical documents that end up in your customer's file, and holding your customer's personal data along the way, might not be who you think they are.
You usually only find out when something goes wrong: a design engineer sends a technical question and the reply doesn't quite land, or a customer asks how their data is being handled and the answer is vague, or a job stalls for two weeks because a time-zone gap slowed a chase.
How We're Set Up
Every application submitted through DNO Renewables is handled by our own UK-based team. That's not a marketing line, it's how we've deliberately built the business.
- All staff based in the UK. Our team works from different parts of the country rather than one central office, but every person handling your applications lives and works here.
- Applications overseen by our Head of Operations and Head of Compliance. Nothing goes to the DNO without sitting inside a workflow that both of them are accountable for. That includes SLDs, offer letter reviews, export limit responses, and commissioning documents.
- Trained on our own systems and processes. Every member of the team is trained on how each DNO wants things submitted: Northern Powergrid, UKPN, National Grid, SSEN, ENWL and SPEN each have their own quirks, and our internal knowledge base captures the lessons we've learned across thousands of real applications.
- No outsourcing of application work. The people preparing your SLD, drafting your G99, chasing your design engineer and reviewing your offer letter are on our team, not contracted through a third party.
Why It Matters for the Quality of Your Applications
DNO applications aren't a form-filling exercise. They're a technical submission where the language, the ordering of information, and the way you respond to a design engineer's follow-up can materially change how quickly a job gets approved, or whether it gets approved at all.
Someone accountable is reading it
Because our Head of Operations and Head of Compliance oversee the workflow, questionable submissions get flagged before they leave our system, not after the DNO comes back with an RFI. The person doing the work knows their name is attached to it.
Consistency across your jobs
If you send us five applications, we want the fifth to look and read like the first. That's much easier when the same trained team is handling all of them, with a shared internal knowledge base, than when the work is spread across contractors who don't talk to each other.
Real conversations with real design engineers
A lot of DNO work happens in the follow-up emails. Design engineers ask nuanced questions. They often want a phone call rather than three days of email. A UK team on UK working hours, who's had those conversations hundreds of times before, gets those exchanges resolved faster.
Why It Matters for Your Customer's Data
Every DNO application contains personal data belonging to your customer: name, home address, MPAN, sometimes their phone number and email. Under UK GDPR, you're the data controller and any company handling that data on your behalf is your processor.
Because our whole team is UK-based and our systems are hosted in the UK, there are no international data transfers to worry about, no need to work out which jurisdiction your customer's details ended up in, and no gap between what your privacy notice says and what actually happens.
You can see exactly how we handle this in our Data Processing Agreement and our Data & Privacy page. It's short, plain-English, and specifically written for installers who need to answer the "where does my data go?" question with confidence.
Why It Matters for Response Times
The unglamorous truth about DNO applications is that most of the time is spent waiting: for LOAs to come back, for design engineers to reply, for offer letters to be issued, for signed acceptance to land. When you're the one chasing, hours matter.
- DNO sends a question at 3pm on a Thursday, our team is already on it. Not queued for tomorrow morning in another time zone.
- An installer calls with a same-day query about a commissioning form, someone on the team can answer in real time.
- An offer letter lands with a lower export limit than requested, our compliance oversight means the response is drafted by someone who understands the trade-offs, not templated.
What This Looks Like Day-to-Day for You
You submit an application through our portal. It lands with our UK team the same working day. It's prepped, reviewed, and submitted to the DNO under our workflow. Every step is visible to you in the dashboard, and every comment thread on the application is with a person who works for us, in the UK.
If something needs a phone call, you can call us on 01670 331 090 and get through to someone who can actually pull up your job.
The Bottom Line
It's completely fine for a business to be run however it chooses to be run, including using outsourced or offshore teams. But you deserve to know how the company handling your customers' data and preparing technical documents in your name is actually structured.
Ours is straightforward: UK-based team, trained in-house, overseen by our Head of Operations and Head of Compliance, no application work outsourced. That's what sits behind every G98, G99, offer letter review, and commissioning submission we handle.
If that's the kind of setup you want behind your installations, we'd be glad to look after them.
